Mother and Baby

Hearing your child cry after carrying him or her in your womb for nine months is the most precious moment of your life. You may have been through a lot of places, tasted different cuisines, successful in your career; but none of these achievements can ever replace your happiness when you see your child that can either look exactly like you, your partner, or a mixture of both.

As a mother, your topmost priority in life is to always keep your baby safe. Wrapping your child around your arms is one of the safest places for him or her. Whenever you carry your little one around you, the bond that you have shared with your child right when he or she was still inside your womb becomes stronger.

Sad to say, not all infants are given the privilege to be held by their mothers the moment they come out from the womb. Some of which are due to maternal death, while a fraction of it may be due to unexpected or unwanted pregnancy.

A mother’s touch is important for the development of the infant, physically and psychologically; thus, mothers should not take their child for granted. Research shows that an absence of a mother’s touch can lead infants to depression. Not only that, it also decreases a child’s confidence and willingness to strive better in life.

There are still several benefits babies can get from being touched by their mothers:

Babies feel loved, secured, and recognized.

To be held by our loved ones make us feel secured and loved without any doubt. It is also a sign that they have accepted us in their circle. This is also how babies feel whenever their mothers hold them. The gentler the touch, the more comfortably safe and loving it is. Also, there is an exchange of acceptance for both parties.

Mothers and babies feel relaxed.

Nothing feels more relaxing than seeing your baby sleeping soundly. Seeing your little one feeling relaxed is an assurance that you did your job well as a mother. As for the infant, nothing ever feels more calming than knowing that his or her mother is sleeping beside him or her.

Mothers can reduce postpartum depression.

Giving birth can give you variety of emotions; either excitement, fear, joy, or the most unexpected and less wanted emotion, depression.

Postpartum depression occurs right after giving childbirth. It may happen due to hormonal changes, sudden adjustment of lifestyle, or fatigue. Women who experience this emotion are treated successfully with medication or psychotherapy. However, this can be prevented with proper diet, exercise, stress reduction, and understanding.

Taking care of your baby can be very exhausting since you don’t almost get to pamper yourself, hang out with your friends anytime you want, or do activities spontaneously; but seeing your baby healthy and at ease already makes you feel contented and happy. It may have ripped you off your freedom, but the joy you feel seeing your little child smiling, crying, or simply staring at you is enough to know that you are doing just fine, or even happier than ever.

You can improve your baby’s sleeping patterns.

Letting your baby feel your gentle touch keeps him or her calm. Unlike us, babies are not yet capable of doing various movements and they tend to be sleepyheads. As long your baby feels your presence with your touch, he or she can already be sure that he or she is okay until falling into deep slumber.

Mothers lactate more.

Skin-to-skin contact between the mother and the baby is not only mainly beneficial for the baby, but also for the mother, as well. Having a closer contact with your baby is important to let your baby recognize you as his or her mother. Not only that, it also increases your oxytocin production.

Oxytocin is a hormone responsible for lactation. The more oxytocin your body releases, the more milk you produce for you little one. Feeding your baby with milk straight from the breast is essential for their growth and development.

Though breastfeeding is much ideal for babies, sadly, not all women are capable of producing much milk.

Motherhood Flaws to Avoid in Taking Care of the Baby

The joy that motherhood brings to every woman who carries her baby for 9 months is something that money can’t buy. The excitement that the soon-to-be parent brings in their hearts and minds is contagious as they patiently wait for the day when their baby will say “hello” to his new world.

Even before the baby was born, the new parents have already prepared all the things that their baby needs. Aside from the material things that the baby needs, they have also asked advice from their parents about nursing or taking care of a newborn baby. They want to give their baby the best of everything.

The first few days or months will not be easy for the new parents because what they have learned from their parents about baby’s care is not 100% the same when they are already actually applying it to their baby. Everything that concerns about the baby’s reactions or movements like crying, spitting up or vomiting can already make them panic and worried.

As a new mom, you want to give your baby all the tender loving care to make her comfortable. It’s normal that you want to personally take care of your baby, to be with your baby all the time and to see to it that your baby will always be comfortable. However, because of wanting so much to give your baby only the best. You tried to do everything for your baby without being aware that you’re already over reacting or over protective. Instead of doing what’s right, you have already made a mistake that will not only affect your baby but your relationship with your husband. Some of these common mistakes that you should avoid doing are:

1. Baby Hogging

You want to hold your baby all the time that you already neglect doing other household chores like cooking and taking care of the needs of your husband. You give all your time to your baby without knowing that you have already forgotten that your husband also needs you. Give your husband a time to take care of your baby and to spend time with your baby. Let him help you take care of your baby.

2. Cryings

You don’t want your baby to cry for fear that your baby is not feeling well, is in pain, and is not comfortable. Because of this, you lift your baby immediately the moment he starts to cry. You should remember that crying is good for your baby. It is good for the lungs. The moment he cries, just give him time to cry, it is his way of expressing what he feels. Sometimes he cries because he wants you to carry him, to be close to you. He cries because his diaper is already full or he is already hungry.  However, if the crying continues, you must call your pediatrician because your baby must not be feeling well.

3. Personal hygiene

Because you spend most of your time with your baby and in doing the household chores, you already forgot to even comb your hair, to fix your nails and to make yourself presentable and beautiful for your husband. Just because you have to take care of your baby does not mean that you will no longer pamper your own self. Give yourself a break; spend precious time with your husband before he spends time with another woman.

4. Breastfeeding schedule

Waking up your baby to breastfeed him is not advisable. Your baby will cry when he is hungry; hence, there’s no need to wake him up when unnecessary. Remember, you and your baby have to sleep well, especially at night.

5. Confusing spitting up with vomiting

Your baby will spit up if he is full; hence, it is important to let your baby burp after feeding him. Vomiting could be a sign that your baby is not feeling well.

6. Oral care

Just because your baby has no teeth yet, you did not give attention to his oral care. Even without teeth, you have to wipe the gums of your baby before he sleeps. This will remove milk residue in your baby’s mouth.

Mother’s knows best; hence, you have to trust your motherly instincts. You know what’s best for your baby because you’re always with him. However, it would also be good if you solicit advice about baby’s care from other people.

How Moms and Babies Build Relationship

A baby’s relationship to his mother should be healthy. Erik Erikson’s theory clearly states that this initial stage of a child’s psychological development is of utmost importance. Without receiving the care a baby needs, he could develop mistrust towards the world and the people around him. Luckily, moms have the instinct to protect and fondle their baby. Babies, on their side, are born to yearn for connection. It depends on the parents to shape his social skills and tie his relationship with the people around him.

Like other things, the relationship between the baby and the mother develops over time. It begins when the baby is inside the mother’s womb. Although they can’t really see their mom’s face yet, they can indistinctly hear her voice and feel her love through the things she do and the foods she eat. After the child is born, he begins to form other ways to connect with his mother.

Breastfeeding and Gazing

Newborns would usually stare at his mother when he is breastfed. This is not a meaningless gaze. This is a way for the baby to recognize the person who is feeding him. In his brain, the face of his mother would register as the person who cares and loves him. That is why the newborn baby would easily stop crying when the mother would pick him up. He would recognize the face of the person he trusts.

Breastfeeding is the first act towards making a connection with the baby. This act establishes both the child and parent’s position in each of their lives. When the mother breastfeeds the baby constantly, the child will come to learn that he is treated well.

Laughing

At about 3 months, a child learns how to have fun and laugh. It is during this time that both parents should engage in fun activities and games with the child. For starters, parents could play peek-a-boo. Some would try making silly faces. All are aimed towards making the baby laugh.

When the child laughs, he learns that spending time with the people he loves and who loves him is fun. He finds that spending his time with those people who make an effort to make him happy is satisfying. He then tries to distinguish those who he could spend time with and those who he doesn’t want to.

Exploring

Mothers often try to keep their child away from harm. They don’t want them scarred or in pain. Often, this leads to over protectiveness, which in turn leads to limiting the child’s experience and making him scared to do new things.

To let the child know that he is understood and that his interest is important, parents should be able to let him explore. Let him run, climb trees, and get small cuts. Let him do some things he can handle like cutting paper. Just be sure to be always there to guide him along the way. Your presence will help him feel secure, too.

Empathizing

A child learns to empathize from the people closest to him. If a mother displays concern for her child, the child will also display concern towards other people. For instance, when a child cries, a mother usually sings to him and rubs his back. Sometimes, she would give him a candy. When a child sees another kid crying, he too will try to console her by doing the same thing his mother does to him.

From birth until the child continually grows, he learns what it means to make relationships. His idea will be based on how his parents, especially his mother, treat him. When done right, the child will not grow socially awkward. He would learn to trust, enjoy, explore, and empathize with other people. He would grow caring and loving.

This relationship building between the mom and the child will go a long way. Mothers should realize how strong their influence to their child could be and use it in order to raise someone who would be socially healthy.

Guide to Keeping Your Own Sleeping Time

When a baby comes into the household, big changes begin to take place in the old lifestyle of parents. No longer solely responsible for their individual lives, they have to be able to take care of another human being that is helpless without the parents. One of the most significant  changes is usually visible with mothers. When a baby arrives, sleep says goodbye. Mothers have to devote their time in caring, feeding, and watching over their offspring.

One of the key problems all mothers have is fatigue and insomnia, affecting their day-to-day activities that they would have completed normally before becoming a mom. This entry will help moms address this problem, helping them get back their much-needed energy, and keep their sanity.

1.) Sleep when baby does.

Whenever you rock your baby and put him in his crib for a nap time, make sure you take one too. Don’t try to be a supermom by taking that extra few hours to catch up on housework because you’ll be needing as much shut-eye as you can get, at least while your baby is still young.

If you are worried that something will happen to your child while you are asleep, you can always ask your spouse, family, or even friends, to watch over your baby for you. Caring for a baby doesn’t have to be an individual project, especially if your sleepyhead can’t function at its optimum level.

2.) Find and set a cycle.

For a couple of days, try to analyze your child’s daily patterns, checking feeding time, sleeping time, and playtime carefully. Once you’ve got a general pattern set, work around that schedule, and plan things ahead. This is to make sure that you stick to that cycle and to get your baby used to it too.

The importance of having a cycle is that it gives you more control over what you are doing, helping you get longer periods of rest while still being an attentive mommy. Setting a sleep cycle for your baby will probably be the most important thing for you to do. The longer and smoother your baby’s sleep cycles are, the more time you will have sleep for yourself.

Also, keeping a stable feeding cycle will help you prepare bottles beforehand, or if you are a breast-feeder, you’ll know when to get up and feed the baby. A stabilized feeding cycle will eliminate unnecessary wasting of energy by having to get up to hold your crying child whilst preparing his formula, all in a flurry of activity.

3.) Help, help, help!

As slightly mentioned above, you don’t have to do all the work by yourself. Taking care of your baby is not an easy task, and no one is perfect the first time around. As long as you can ask for help from the people around you especially your spouse, then you can take turns in babysitting. If you want to have some more time to sleep at night especially when your child wakes up every one or two hours or the baby needs diaper change, ask your spouse for help. He can go feed the baby for you on some nights, alternating sleeping shifts to give you some rest. As life-partners, mutual effort in a lifetime milestone like this will strengthen you and your spouse’s relationship. Involvement of both parents in child-rearing is crucial for the infant’s development, so having a husband who helps you out will be extremely helpful in more than one sense.

4.) Wise choices.

Every single moment you see, grab it and use it wisely. Bonding with your baby is a wonderful experience you can build through constant care and feeding, but if it becomes a hindrance to your daily life, you have to make wise choices. Sure, you’d like to spend every waking moment of your baby together, but sometimes you just have to understand that life does not work that way. To be a level-headed parent, one who isn’t sleep-deprived, you have to take care of yourself. Sleep deprivation can lead to health deterioration, not letting you be in your optimum self while spending time with your baby. So, you have to make sure to fill up that sleep bar of yours, and accept you aren’t supermom. Enjoy the happy, healthy moments with your growing baby.

The Basics of Making a Baby Burp

Notice that after a mother feeds her child, she would always want her baby to burp. Why is this important? It’s because after a baby eats, there are gas bubbles that are trapped in the gastrointestinal tract that need to be released. If the baby does not release the gas, then the baby will feel rather uncomfortable. He will be feeling bloated and would most likely cry. Of course, the gas can come out the other way as a fart, but it is actually easier to make a baby burp instead of fart. So, if you are a new mother and doesn’t really know much about burping your baby, then what are the things that you have to learn? First thing you have to learn are the burping positions

Burping positions

Sitting Up

Let’s start with the sitting position. To assume this position, you have to put your baby on your lap and make him/her lean a bit to the front. Put your hand on your baby’s chest and use your other hand to slowly pat his/her back until a small burp comes out. This is probably the most comfortable position for you and your child because both of you are sitting down so there’s not really much pressure on the two of you.

Over the Shoulder

This position is probably the most widely used one by mothers. To do this, you just have to place your baby against your shoulder and pat his/her back using your free hand. Your other hand is supposed to hold the baby’s bottom so that he/she will not fall down. This is definitely the most effective position for burping because the shoulder will slightly push against the stomach of the baby which will force out the gas.

Face Down

The last position is the face down pose. In this position, you will be placing your baby on your legs faced down. This means that your baby will be lying on his/her stomach. While in this position, slowly rub or tap your baby’s back and wait for a burp to come out. Due to the nature of this position, pressure is added to the stomach so most likely the position will work.

Although there are other positions out there that may work, by far these three are the most popular ones and the most widely used ones. In fact, these three are the ones that are often recommended to mothers by pediatricians.

Some things to take note of

Spitting during Burping

What happens when your baby starts spitting instead of burping? First of all, don’t worry about it because it does not mean your baby is vomiting. It could probably mean that some of the milk did not go all the way down to the stomach yet and was accompanied by some gas that was coming out. If you notice that your baby spits quite often, then you should start feeding your baby in an upright position instead of a lying position. As your baby grows older, the spitting will decrease gradually.

No Burping

Now, what if your baby does not want to burp? One thing you have to remember is that not all babies burp regularly. Some babies would have gastrointestinal tracts that do not trap that much gas which means that the burping will be less. If your baby does not burp and constantly has stomach discomfort, then you might need to pay a visit to your pediatrician. However, if your baby hardly burps but does not have stomach discomforts, then you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Also, if your baby usually feeds sitting up, then he will really not have much gas inside. So, if your baby drinks milk while sitting, then he/she probably won’t burp so much.

Feeding and burping babies is supposed to be a fun time and a good bonding experience for the two of you. Things will only get stressful if you don’t know what you are doing. So, in order to make life easier for you and your child, always make sure that you know how to burp them so that they will not experience having gas.

Breastfeeding Problems and Solutions

Breastfeeding is really a difficult thing to do especially since there are some painful side effects that mothers may experience after their babies finish latching. However, as a mother, you will be willing to go through all that just to provide your baby with nutrients that he needs so he can grow into a healthy and strong child. So, if you are adamant at breastfeeding your baby until he reaches 2 years old, here are some tips and hacks that will help you have an easier time.

Sore Nipples

Do you feel a sharp or sore pain in your nipple? It’s pretty normal to have that feeling especially if you are a first time mother. However, there are some things that can be done in order to lessen the pain in the nipples. First of all, you have to check your positioning. Your nipple could be painful because your baby might be sucking on the wrong part. It is best that you let your baby suck on the area below the nipple and not above. Another reason why your nipples may be sore is because they are cracked which means that they are very dry. This could be due to defects in your breast pumps or dry weather. If you want to treat cracked nipples, the best way is to put a little bit milk on it. Believe it or not, the breast milk can actually moisten your nipple and even heal it if it is bleeding.

Low Supply of Milk

Although breastfeeding is a supply and demand thing, there will be times that your breasts will have a low supply of milk even when the demand for it is high. One way to increase the supply of milk would be to pump regularly. Of course, you must get yourself a high quality breast pump otherwise your nipples might crack. You have to do some homework on the best breast pumps in the market so you know which ones are good. Also, there are certain foods that can actually increase breast milk supply. If you eat these foods, your milk supply is sure to go up.

Clogged Milk Ducts

When we say clogged milk ducts, we mean that the milk is there but it won’t come out. This is actually a very common problem that a lot of mothers would have. Symptoms of clogged milk ducts would be soreness and lumps in the breast. The main culprit for this kind of problem would usually be stress. If you are stressed and not well rested, you’ll probably have problems getting the milk to flow properly. If you are too tired, get your partner to take over caring for the baby first while you have a nap. You can also massage your breasts to unclog the ducts.

Pump

Inverted Nipples

When you breastfeed, there will probably be times when your nipples will retract. This isn’t really something serious but it will make feeding more difficult as your baby won’t be able to find the nipple. So, how do you deal with this problem? The fastest way would be to use your pump before you breastfeed. The pump will automatically pull the nipple out so the baby won’t have a problem finding it.

Bad Mastitis

Mastitis is an infection that affects your breasts and causes pain. Although it is very common among mothers right after birth, it can lead to something worse if not attended to right away. Since it is a bacterial infection, then you can cure it using an antibiotic. If you have mastitis, I would suggest that you don’t let your baby latch until it is gone. Just pump the milk and put it in a bottle so your baby can still have breast milk.

It is normal for breastfeeding mothers to be uncomfortable at this stage. However, there are ways on how to make things easier and more comfortable. If you happen to experience any of the problems mentioned above, take a look at the solutions so you know how to solve them.
